Home to one of the largest and most stunning conservatories in the United States, East Garfield Park is both a neighborhood rich in history and a neighborhood in bloom. The assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. sparked riots that destroyed much of the neighborhood's assets. What followed were decades of a dwindling population and neighborhood deterioration. East Garfield Park has worked hard to rebuild itself. Today this West Side neighborhood is a burgeoning “green” community featuring the City's Center for Green Technology, several community gardens, four Chicago-area landscape companies, a beautiful 250 acre city park, national recognized public and private schools and affordable new and historic housing.
