Neighborhood Parades > Bud Billiken® Parade and Picnic
The Bud Billiken® Parade and Picnic was begun by Chicago Defender’s newspaper founder, Robert S. Abbott, in 1929 as a way for him to show his appreciation to the newspaper’s paper boys. Always held on the second Saturday of August, it has developed into one the City’s premier Back-to-School event.
Many celebrities, stars of stage and screen, entertainers and elected officials are participants in the parade. However, the real stars of the Bud Billiken® Parade and Picnic are the hundreds of local and out of state bands, drill teams, dance teams, car clubs and the like. At the end of the parade’s route in Washington Park is the After Parade Activities. This is a large picnic with local entertainment, food, music, free give-a-ways etc.
