The 14th annual Chicago SummerDance series presents free Bhangra dance lessons by Soham Dance Space and live music by Red Baraat, performing Punjabi Funk music.
Led by drummer Sunny Jain, Red Baraat is the first and only dhol ‘n’ brass band of its kind in the States, melding the infectious North Indian rhythm Bhangra with brass funk and expressing the human spirit through improvisation and a powerful live sound. Comprised of dhol (double-sided, barrel-shaped North Indian drum slung over one shoulder), percussion and horns, this NYC-based group plays fresh originals, as well as traditional Punjabi songs and Bollywood numbers with a dramatic stage performance and presence. From marching band style, to Indian wedding set up, to festival concerts, Red Baraat have made big waves since their inception.
A center for Indian dance, Soham Dance Space offers unique instruction in Bharatanatyam, a rich dance form that has blossomed out of the cultural and philosophical wealth of India and is interlacing with new dimensions in Chicago. Emphasizing artistry, integrity, and innovation, Soham Dance Space aims to share the art with a diverse community in a space that nurtures culture, creativity, and well-being.
