The Hideout

The Hideout is a small live music club that hosts everything from music and theater performances to book-signings, seminars, art shows, and holiday festivals. It also hosts the venerable Hideout Block Party every September.

Location

The Hideout is located in the center of the industrial corridor along the North Branch of the Chicago River. It is surrounded by factories and the looming City of Chicago Fleet Management Facility. For over a decade city workers and grade school teachers, art students and plumbers, bikers and bike riders have converged at the corner of Ada and Wabansia Streets to dance, and cheer and sing along to their favorite and obscure bands.

Shows at the Hideout

The Hideout is a regular guy bar for irregular folks who just don’t fit in, or just don’t want to fit in. It’s where Jack and Meg White debuted the White Stripes, where Phantom Planet filmed their first low budget video for “California,” which became the theme song for the O.C. It’s where the Ting Tings just filmed their new video. It’s where Robin Hitchcock sang classic rock covers with Mr. Rudy Day. It’s where Joe McFee, and Ken Vandermark, and Areyellah Ra and their friends will blast out Free Jazz every Wednesday night.

Where a big tough Chicago cop bursts through the back stage door so he can hear his idol, Thurston Moore, play improvised guitar solos in tribute to Sun Ra. Where Jon Langford performs with every band he has ever been in, from the Mekons to the Waco Brothers. Where Sam Prekop listens to the Flashlights first Chicago show, where Jeff Tweedy, and Glenn Kotche, and Jon Stiratt, and Mikhail Jorgensen (all WILCO) all try out their experimental new material. Where Billy Corgan spent nine Mondays in a row creating a new band, (Zwan). It where Mavis Staples just recorded a live album called “Hope at the Hideout”.
