The Swedish American Museum preserves and presents Swedish American heritage in the United States for the education and enjoyment of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.
Each year more than 40,000 visitors enjoy the museum’s many programs, including special exhibits, Swedish language and genealogy classes, crafts, folk dancing, concerts, lectures, films, and the interactive Brunk Children's Museum of Immigration.
Permanent Collection
The Swedish American Museum maintains a permanent collection of history, art and artifacts dating back to the mass immigration of Swedes to the Chicago area nearly 200 years ago.
Geneology
The Nordic Research Center is located on the third floor of the museum. There visitors can access actual church records from parishes all over Sweden, through the Internet program GenLine. The Center also has other excellent software and Genealogy classes to aid individuals with their research.
Brunk Children's Museum
The Brunk Children’s Museum of Immigration is a new interactive, hands-on museum for children ages 3-12. The museum has a Swedish focus but the story of Swedish immigration parallels that of many other groups who forged new lives in America. Educational programs are available.
Special Exhibits
Finally, the Swedish American Museum hosts four major exhibits per year. These exhibits celebrate the arts and crafts of well-known and up-and-coming Scandinavian artists.
