Oak Woods Cemetery

Built in 1854, Oak Wood Cemetery is the most historically significant cemetary on the south side of Chicago. Buried there are renowned figures, such as: Mayors Thompson, Washington, Woodworth and Sawyer, Olympian Jesse Owens, Civil Rights activist Ida B. Wells, and physicist Enrico Fermi. Additionally, six thousand Confederate soldiers, prisoners of war who died at Camp Douglas, are buried together beneath a towering monument. During office hours pick up a free walking tour map for a self guided tour of the cemetery.
