Museum of Science and Industry

Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry (MSI), the largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere, is home to more than 35,000 artifacts and 14-plus acres of hands-on exhibits designed to spark scientific inquiry and creativity.

Exhibitions

The MSI's ongoing mission has been to inspire the inventive genius in visitors with world-class, permanent exhibits such as:

  • The U-505 Submarine, the only German U-boat in the United States
  • The Great Train Story, with more than 30 trains on 1,400 feet of track
  • The Coal Mine, which allows guests to descend into an Illinois mine
  • Earth Revealed, which provides a stunning look at our planet and the forces that affect it
  • Fast Forward … Inventing the Future, showcases cutting-edge technology and innovation from inventors from around the world

The MSI is also famous for world-premiere temporary exhibits like the current Smart Home: Green + Wired—a fully-functioning three-story, eco-friendly home built on the Museum’s grounds.

Educational Programs

Even bigger than the MSI’s mission is its vision to inspire and motivate children to achieve their full potential in the fields of science, technology, engineering and medicine. In addition to fun and interactive exhibits, student learning labs, special in-depth tours, after-school science clubs, teen volunteer programs, teacher development classes and community outreach are all ways in which the MSI seeks to make science “come alive” for children of all ages.
