Nestled inside the southwest tower of the Michigan Avenue Bridge, the McCormick Tribune Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum uncovers the marvels of the Chicago River. Spiral your way to the top of the five-story structure and find out how this prairie stream was the key to transforming a marsh into a metropolis in less than a century. Learn why the river’s flow was reversed, and discover which once-nearly-extinct plant and animal species are now returning. The Bridgehouse Museum shares the story of how the Chicago River changed with the growth of a city.
The historic bridge tower itself is a relic of another time, when bridge tenders operated the raising and lowering of the bridge from the narrow tower. Visitors are treated to a rare glimpse at the inner workings of the bridge, as the Museum houses its gears and the two 108-horsepower engines that power them.

- Additional accessibility info: The McCormick Tribune Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum is located in a historic five story bridge tower, reminiscent of a lighthouse. Because climbing the stairs may be difficult for visitors with limited mobility and to accommodate visitors with disabilities, the Bridgehouse has a comparable exhibit experience on the first floor. The gear room, which houses the gears that operate the bridge, is accessible from the first floor. An accessibility ramp leading to the Riverwalk is located at Wabash Avenue and Wacker Drive.
