Macy's on State Street is the second largest department store in the world, and has been a quintessential Chicago destination for over a century. This landmark 12-story building spanning an entire city block is listed on the National Register of Historic Spaces, and formerly housed the Chicago retail institution, Marshall Field and Company. Founded in 1892, Marshall Field and Company rose to prominence as one of the premiere department stores in the world under the helm of the Chicago merchant and philanthropist, Marshall Field. His commitment to outstanding customer service was captured by his famous slogan, "Give the lady what she wants," and became one of the enduring hallmarks of the the Marshall Fields department store.
Today, this Macy's flagship store features 10 floors of retail space, a variety of unique restaurants, annual signature special events and outstanding visitor services. Historic symbols of the Marshall Field's era still adorn the building's interior and exterior, including the first and largest Tiffany glass tile ceiling in the world, a fountain designed by famed Chicago architect Daniel Burnham and the original name plaques and signature bronze clocks of the Marshall Field and Company store. Macy's remains a leader in trends and merchandise, from beauty and fashion to home decor and entertaining. Complimentary self-guided, self-paced audio tours of this landmark building are available in the 7th Floor Visitor Center during normal store hours. Visitors are also eligible for an 11% visitor savings pass with proper identification.
