Goodman Theatre

The Goodman Theatre is Chicago's oldest and largest not-for-profit theater.  Founded in 1925 in memory of Kenneth Sawyer Goodman, a famed Chicago playwright, the Goodman Theatre has been an important part of Chicago's rich theater life ever since.  The Goodman currently occupies the landmark site of the former Harris and Selwyn Theaters in what is now known as Chicago's Loop Theater District.  Their world-class productions, internationally renowned artists, and comprehensive educational outreach programs earned the Goodman a Special Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre in 1992.

The Goodman is the first theater to present August Wilson's complete Pittsburgh cycle of plays exploring the African American experience in the 20th century, including the premiere productions of Seven Guitars, King Hedley II and Gem of the Ocean.  Other recent productions of note include Chuck Smith's acclaimed revivals of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, A Raisin in the Sun and The Amen Corner; Mary Zimmerman's premiere productions of The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, Journey to the West, The Odyssey and the Philip Glass opera Galileo Galilei; several premieres of David Mamet's plays, including American Buffalo and A Life in the Theatre; and its annual production of A Christmas Carol, a highlight of every Chicago holiday season.
