The library contains over 15,000 volumes. The special collections component of Gerber/Hart contains artifactual items such as buttons, banners, posters and clothing. The library is also a repository for the records of individuals, organizations and businesses both in Chicago and nationwide, that are of relevance to the LGBT community.

Gerber/Hart Library sponsors programs on LGBT-related topics, and hosts book discussion groups, film series, and historical exhibitions. Researchers from around the country make use of the Gerber/Hart archives and special collections for theses, dissertations, books and films.
