The Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place joined Broadway in Chicago's family of historic theaters in September 2010, after undergoing an extensive renovation and makeover to give the space an exciting new look. The theater opened with a four-night inaugural engagement of An Evening With Sutton Foster.
The building was originally built in the 1970s as the original home of the Drury Lane Theatre. Over the years, the space changed from theater to movie theater and back, when it became the Drury Lane Water Tower, which hosted a year-and-a-half run of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, as well as productions of Shout and Xanadu.
The theater's recent renovation gave it a brand new entrance, reconfigured lobby and a completely transformed interior decor that reflects a more modern look. The Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place is one of the city's many world-class theaters that regularly bring theater shows from all over the world to Chicago.
