The Blues Brothers Movie Experience

The Blues Brothers (1980), directed by John Landis and starring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as "Joliet" Jake and Elwood Blues, introduced new audiences to some of the greatest blues musicians and soul singers of all time while paying tribute to Chicago as the birthplace of gospel music and the electrified blues. Left: As Jake Blues (John Belushi) famously says of Daley Plaza, "That's where they got that Picasso." Right: Don your Ray Bans and recreate your favorite scenes from The Blues Brothers movie while earning Explore Chicago's On Location Foursquare Badge.

Eligible Locations

Hint: After you've "checked-in" at each venue, look for Explore Chicago's Tips on your Foursquare game for behind-the-scenes movie anecdotes.

1. Location of the Fictional Saint Helen of the Blessed Shroud, W. 18th St. at S. Normal Ave.

After "Joliet" Jake gets out of Prison, the Blues Brothers visit the orphanage where they grew up, only to discover that it might be sold because of unpaid property taxes. Blues Brothers filmmakers built a fake façade for the orphanage "Saint Helen of the Blessed Shroud" in an alley just north of 18th and Normal Avenue.

2. Pilgrim Baptist Church of South Chicago, 9114 S. Burley Ave. at E. 91st St.

The Pilgrim Baptist Church of South Chicago is the real life model for the "Triple Rock Baptist Church" in the Blues Brothers movie.

3. Location of Historic Maxwell Street Market, Maxwell St. & Halsted St.

Two scenes in the Blues Brothers movie were filmed at, or inspired by, the historic Maxwell Street Market. Blues singer and guitarist John Lee Hooker was filmed live singing "Boom, Boom" on the street in the middle of the bustling Maxwell Street Market outside of Nate's Deli (formerly at 807 W. Maxwell St., now closed). The interior of Nate's Deli was replicated on a Hollywood set for Aretha Franklin's scenes in the Blues Brothers movie.

4. Location of the Fictional Ray's Music Store, 300 E. 47th St.

A mural on the NE corner of 47th & S. Prairie Ave. was created for scenes shot outside "Ray's Music Exchange", in which hundreds of extras danced to Ray Charles' rendition of "Shake a Tail Feather".

5. Wrigley Field, 1060 W. Addison St.

In the Blues Brothers Movie, Elwood Blues lists 1060 W. Addison St. (Wrigley Field) as the home address on his Illinois driver's license, tricking the cops and other adversaries.

6. South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. South Shore Dr.
Exterior shots of the fictional "Palace Hotel Ballroom", where the Blues Brothers played a gig to raise money for the orphanage with the help of Cab Calloway, were filmed at what is now the South Shore Cultural Center.

7. Lower Wacker Dr. at Michigan Ave.

Lower Wacker Drive has been featured in many cinematic scenes, including a climatic car chase in The Blues Brothers movie.

8. Daley Plaza, 50 W. Washington St.

As Jake Blues famously says of Daley Plaza, "That's where they got that Picasso." In the movie, Jake & Elwood Blues (John Belushi & Dan Ackroyd) crash their Bluesmobile through the plate glass windows of the Richard J. Daley Center.

9. Cook County Assessor's Office, 118 N. Clark St.

The Blues Brothers' ultimate destination is the Cook County Assessor's Office in the City Hall-County Building, just west of the Daley Center.
