Life By the Lake: Matt Vanderzalm's Photo Journal

Matt captured an Original Chicago Rainbow cone, a tower of chocolate, strawberry, pistachio, orange and other flavors of ice cream and sherbert, just before it melted.

In Matt's words: "Taste the rainbow! I ended up down in Beverly, on the far southwest side on a hot summer day and decided to look up the Original Rainbow Cone, a Chicago institution for 80 some years. Next time I might go for the waffle cones, since they smelled so good."

Windows on the side of the Henry Hines Laboratory for Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago in Hyde Park make an interesting geometrical pattern.  The Canal Street Railroad bridge raises vertically to let Chicago River traffic pass beneath, then lowers to let Amtrak trains pass over the river. Now the only vertical lift bridge on the Chicago River, it was the heaviest vertical lift bridge in the country at the time of its construction in 1915.  A Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) train speeds past. A red brick building is visible in the background.
I didn't have any orchid ice cream at the Chicago Turkish Festival, but it was plenty popular. Promontory Point affords an excellent view of Chicago's skyline looking north.
Stained glass hangs above the entrance to The Seminary Coop Bookstore in Hyde Park. A group of people play software in Washington Park as the sun sets. A mural has the following words painted on it: "Chicago Misses You"
A mural depicts a group of school children who appear to be staring at the camera. A family rides bicycles during Bike the Drive, an annual event where Lake Shore Drive is closed to cars. The Valois Cafeteria is a Hyde Park institution. Valois exists for days when french toast is less a craving and more a categorical imperative.
This photograph captures the reflection of a cyclist in a puddle of water on a road. Little fluffy clouds drift lazily over Promontory Point. On a clear day, you can see pretty far into the next state. A bird on a fence, with a cheery red brick wall visible in the background.
A surge of water from Lake Michigan.
