Osaka Garden, in Jackson Park, with the Museum of Science & Industry in the distance. Chicago’s glow dominates the skyline even when the buildings that produce it aren’t visible. Changing weather patterns make views over the Jackson Park Lagoons, such as this night shot, a daily treat. The interior of Ida Noyes Hall at the University of Chicago has gothic architectural details.
Two distinctive strands of Chicago’s history, industry and architecture, come together in this 1910 building that, until recently, stood at 31st & Kedzie, south of the Little Village neighborhood. Holy Family Catholic Church on Roosevelt is one of few pre-fire buildings in Chicago, dating to 1857. I happened by it on a particularly lovely day. Chicago’s lakefront neighborhoods house a stunning collection of grand old apartment hotels from the 1920s, like the former South Shore View, located on South Shore Drive just south of the South Shore Cultural Center, which was designed by architect William Doerr in 1923.
Garfield Park's magnificent 1928 fieldhouse, topped by a glistening gold dome, and decorated with the lavish terra cotta that was the calling card of architects Michaelsen & Rognstad. A photo of a young photographer in Renaissance Park, at 79th & Throop in Auburn Gresham. The word "CITY" is painted on a wall in a now-empty building which used to house the Washburne Trade School.
A metal sign on a chain link demarkates the old boundary for the US Steel South Works. The Green Line, part of Chicago’s famous elevated train system, connects the Loop to the South and West sides. Many stations and lines provide spectacular views, and here the tracks form an interesting pattern themselves as they converge towards the skyline.

Eric Allix Rogers has visited and photographed 72 of Chicago's 77 official community areas. He coordinates a nonprofit fellowship program at the University of Chicago, among other things, and fills his free time exploring the city by bike and on foot, seeking out both the ordinary and the extraordinary, with a focus on the built environment.
