Maxim's bar

Maxim’s opened in 1963 and quickly became the gathering spot for celebrities and Chicago’s elite. The striking décor, an exact replica of the famous Parisian restaurant, was just the starting point.  The opulent ambiance, fine food, and the renown of the original Maxim’s were an unbeatable combination, and soon anybody who was anybody showed up. Liza Minnelli, Rod Steiger, Woody Allen, and Audrey Hepburn were just some of the bold-face names who dined there.

Maxim’s shares its rich-and-famous history with the building in which it is located, Astor Towers, which began its life as a boutique hotel with a French theme catering to celebrities. As the hotel’s dining spot, Maxim’s was designed to recreate the décor and cuisine of the world’s most famous French restaurant. Sammy Davis, Jr., Bette DavisNatalie Wood, and The Beatles were just some of the hotel’s celebrity guests.

The Astor Tower hotel became a condominium in the 1970’s, and Maxim’s restaurant closed its doors in the 1980’s. In 2000, the family of Nancy Goldberg bequeathed the property to the City of Chicago, which has since operated it as a performance and private event rental space.

The original Maxim’s de Paris, opened at the turn of the century, continues operating today, owned by Pierre Cardin. The restaurant’s image remains strong in popular culture. The location has been mentioned in books, songs, and films, including these instances:

  • An extended sequence in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" takes place in Maxim's.
  • Owen Wilson and Marion Cotillard's characters travel back in time to the Belle Époque and have dinner together at Maxim's in Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris."
  • In the 1958 film "Gigi," a musical number entitled "Waltz at Maxim's" provides a good overview of the atmosphere and décor.
