This area between North Michigan Avenue (The Magnificent Mile) and Lake Michigan contains luxurious apartment buildings and hotels, world-class restaurants, top attractions like Navy Pier and the Museum of Contemporary Art and leading medical centers, including Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Northwestern’s colleges of law and medicine also are in Streeterville, named for George Wellington Streeter (1837-1921), an eccentric ship captain who laid claim to the area but lost in the courts and ended up in prison.
Located throughout the city, Chicago Tribute Markers of Distinction commemorate where notable Chicagoans lived and worked. Two markers in Streeterville honor architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and aviation pioneer Octave Chanute.
