Jenny

Publicist for Metro/Smart Bar and Vice President of the Chicago Independent Radio Project; 30; lifelong Chicagoan; lives in Andersonville

What neighborhood do you live in?
I live in Andersonville. I love my neighborhood for many reasons, but what I like best is the diversity of people who live in Andersonville, and how welcoming the neighborhood is to everyone, no matter what your background. I also love the proximity to the lakefront beaches and the bike path, and the strong independent businesses like Kopi Café and Women and Children First Bookstore that thrive on Clark Street. The neighborhood is filled with history and character, but constant energy at the same time.

What is your favorite thing about Chicago?

My favorite thing about Chicago is that it is a city where you can make your dreams come true. My grandparents all came here as young people because they felt Chicago offered them a better, more exciting life – I try to honor their leap of courage by taking advantage of everything Chicago has to offer. Whether it is access to excellent colleges, or a wonderfully supportive music, theatre and arts community, or thousands of organizations and groups centered around all kinds of quirky interests and hobbies, Chicago is a city that is for everyone - no matter who you are or what your interests are, you are never alone in this city.

What is your favorite place for hot dogs?
Hot Doug’s on California is by far the best hot dog place in Chicago. He does the truly authentic Chicago-style hot dog as well as a variety of gourmet dogs you have to taste to believe. My favorite moment was when I told my vegetarian sister Angela that Doug sold authentic Chicago-style vegetarian hot dogs – I think she cried, she was so happy!

Favorite pizza place?
I love the neighborhood pizza places the best – Dino’s on Higgins will always have a soft spot in my heart. I also love Gino’s East and Giordanos.

Stuffed crust or thin crust?
Stuffed crust! Unless you’re in a hurry, then square-cut thin crust is acceptable, but only if you promise to do stuffed next time.

Favorite Chicago tradition?
Zoolights and “Caroling to the Animals” at Lincoln Park Zoo is one of my very favorite traditions and one I think that is pretty unique to Chicago. Where else can you wish a walrus a "Happy New Year" while sipping hot chocolate?

Favorite place in Chicago?

There are so many great places in Chicago, but obviously Metro has a special place in my heart – there are few thrills equal to discovering your new favorite band before anyone else!

Where do you like to bring visiting friends or out-of-town guests?
I like to show visitors the big and small picture of Chicago. Big, by taking them to see The Bean at Millennium Park, a visit to the Art Institute, to see the Picasso, or a game at Wrigley, or for a drink on the 95th Lounge of the John Hancock building. Then, I like to show them the small things that make Chicago so unique – beer and board games at Guthries Tavern, ice cream at Margies, a hot dog at Dougs, a bike ride along the lake, and at least one train ride on the "L".

Favorite hidden spot?
My favorite beach, Hollywood, is never too crowded, and there’s a great mix of people there on a summer afternoon.
