Donated by a Chicago brewer of German descent, Francis Dewes (1845 - 1941), this artwork was produced by German sculptor Felix Gorling. It honors the park's namesake, Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), a naturalist and explorer from the Kingdom of Prussia, an area that is now northern Germany.
