Biking in Chicago

Cyclists pedal along Chicago's nearly 26 miles of lakefront bike paths.

Named one of the five 'Best Cities for Cycling' in America by Bicycling magazine, Chicago's bike-friendliness is due in large part to the efforts of Mayor Richard M. Daley, who is an avid cyclist himself.  Under his leadership, hundreds of miles of bike lanes have been designated on city streets, along with numerous other free and convenient amenities for cyclists all over the city.

Biking in Chicago Fun Facts

  • There are nearly 150 miles of designated bike lanes on city streets.
  • 18 miles of lakefront bike trails run between Hollywood Avenue in Edgewater and the South Shore Cultural Center in the South Shore, Grand Crossing neighborhood.
  • There are 10,000 bike racks installed throughout Chicago, more than any other city in the United States.
  • The Chicago Transit Authority is a bike-friendly public transit system, with bike racks installed on all buses and bikes allowed on trains during non-rush hour times.
  • Mayor Daley's Bicycle Ambassadors Program provides outreach and promotes bike-safety education for all road users – cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians alike – in order to increase ridership.
